Relationship Dissolution
W.
Characteristics of Jealousy- Activity
Alfalfa and Spanky run away from Butch and Woim after they perform in the ballet and deceive the bullies that they are girls. At the end of the chase, Alfalfa jumps in some random person’s pool and it turns out to be Waldo’s pool. Alfalfa gets out the pool, without his underwear, and there sits Darla and Waldo by the pool drinking a lemonade. Alfalfa is first embarrassed, but then jealous that his lover, Darla, and Waldo are hanging out together. According to Guerrero, “Jealousy occurs when people worry that they might lose something they value, such as a good relationship or high-status position, due to interference from a third party.”[23] This is a start to Alfalfa’s jealousy that sprouts the rest of the movie, where he battles to save Darla’s love.

Catastrophe Theory
Alfalfa and Darla went through their critical incident early on in the film after their attempt of lunch date. Darla crashed the rascals go cart into the clubhouse and then she left in anger. From there, Alfalfa and Darla’s relationship was ruined. Davis’ catastrophe model of disengagement suggests “Relationships break up in a radically different way; they do not gradually unwind through stages of relational dissolution, but instead via sudden death.” [24] Although there were other damaging events following the lunch date incident, the lunch date was the activating event to Darla and Alfalfa’s break-up.
