McCroskey and McCain’s Types of Attraction
Alfalfa tries to show his infatuation for Darla numerous times throughout the movie. Even though he is this sort of dorky kid, Darla thinks he is so adorable and smooth. On their first date, Alfalfa serenades Darla with the song “You are so beautiful.” She is mesmerized by him and thinks his hair sticking up and his big ears are so attractive. According to McCroskey and McCain, “physical attraction results when we are drawn to people’s look, whether it is someone’s body, eyes, hair, attire or other aspects of a person’s appearance.”[7] Darla is dazzled by Alfalfa, as he is by her.

Felmlee’s Fatal Attraction
Later in the film, Alfalfa tries to serenade Darla again, but this time to win back her heart. He enters in the talent show, and while warming up … spiked his water with soap. Of course, his performance goes horribly and he embarrasses himself in front of not only Darla, but his friends. Alfalfa was so desperate to win Darla back, that he did not have a care in the world while performing. At this point, he was fatally attracted to Darla.
As previously discussed, he and Darla were so physically attracted to each, but it may have led to potential danger for the two. From the text in Felmlee’s theory of fatal attraction, “We could eventually discover that the very qualities we once found attractive are not as desirable as first thought.”[8] At this point, Darla was no longer attracted to Alfalfa, and he was just making it worse. Alfalfa was a devote, but he did some crazy things just to get Darla’s attention.
