Sex and Gender Differences in Characteristics
In the film, the sleepover scene does a great job of showing the stereotypical gender differences of men and women. Boys are into pooping and farting, while girls are into Barbies. Watching the clip, you could catch yourself denying and admitting some behaviors associated with your gender. According to Guerrero, “Many men and women display a mix of feminine and masculine behaviors and beliefs are classified as androgynous.” [3]
The sleepover scene establishes many differences, but not until later in the movie does everyone realize it is okay to have both feminine and masculine characteristics. The whole movie plays off the way you should act with your gender in accordance to your sex. The boys had to stick together as a group. Alfalfa had to follow along and be masculine to keep his friends, when really he was okay with showing a more loving and emotional side.

Act Like a Lady; Think Like a man.
Alfalfa was the boy most girls today want to have. He did whatever he could to show Darla his affection and often times was not afraid to show it in front of people. Alfalfa’s singing debut of “You are so beautiful” really proved he loved Darla. Although his performance went terribly, he sure received an ‘A’ for effort. Alfalfa proved to Darla throughout the movie that he truly loved Darla.
Steve Harvey wrote, “A man will do three things when he truly loves a woman: profess, provide, and protect.”[4] In the talent show scene, he professed his love for Darla and embarrassed himself in the act. His attempt of a candlelight dinner was Alfalfa’s way of showing he could be a provider. After the race, he gets in a fight with his competitors and bullies which was his way of showing he could protect not only Darla, but his friends. Alfalfa proved his worth in many comical yet loving ways, which is finally why he ended up being with Darla at the end of the movie.
