Children and Family
Family Types
Although this film is centered around children, there is not much spotlight on the parent-child relationship. Mainly, you only see parents in the movie when one of the kids has a sporting event. One example would be when Whoopi Goldberg showed up to the race for Buckwheat. Buckwheat simply acknowledged her presence. It was interesting that Whoopi was one of the parents without a spouse at the race. It is hard to draw conclusion on what type of family they have, but I do not think it is a nuclear family. According to Isaacson and Radish, “A nuclear family consists of a wife, husband, and their biological or adopted children.”[5] Whoopi could be a single parent, but there is no clear evidence.

Parenting Approaches
Since the children are not monitored very much in the movie, it is safe to say that most parents’ approaches to parenting were authoritative or permissive. The rascals were not in the house much and they all did their own thing during the day. They still seemed to have a fulfilling life, and that their parents all supported them in the dance recital, sleepover, talent show, and the race.
Donald Trump plays the role of Waldo's dad in the movie and he was the type of parent to pay for his child’s happiness, but still showed support when he could. In Baumrind’s parenting approach theory, “Authoritative parents are demanding and directive, but also responsive.”[6] It is a mix between an authoritarian and permissive approach. I would categorize all the parents more towards authoritative because they are all still supportive of what their kids do, which is why the movie is centered around all the fun and adventures the kids have in the movie.
